Amines are typically insoluble in water but soluble in acidic solutions. Reaction of the basic amine with an acid forms a soluble ammonium compound. Put some water in a test tube. Add a few drops of a liquid. Stir the mixture and check for possible dissolution. Add some hydrochloric acid solution. Stir again and check for dissolution. Dissolution is a positive test for the presence of an amine group in the compound.
